Pigmentation & Uneven Skin Tone
Skin pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation as it is clinically known) is the result of overproduction of melanin in the skin. Melanin is the substance that is responsible for colouring both the skin and hair.
When we overproduce melanin in some areas of our skin more than others this can create dark patches and the appearance of an uneven skin tone.
One of the leading causes of this skin concern in Australia is exposure to the sun. UV light damages this skin and this results in melanin being produced in the affected areas, the body does this to try to protect the skin from UV damage in the future.
Other causes of an uneven skin tone include pollution (particularly on the face), Hormones, and a condition called Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation which happens after scaring skin lesions, or damage to the skin.
Preventative measures should be taken to reduce the risk of uneven skin tone, such as applying SPF to the skin daily. If skin pigmentation has already occurred then Chic has a number of treatments available to help alleviate hyper-pigmentation.
